Cape Town Cockroach Identification Guide
German Cockroach (Blattella germanica)

Description
The German Cockroach is the most common indoor cockroach species worldwide, and a major pest in Cape Town's homes and businesses. It's a small roach, about 1.1 to 1.6 cm long, tan to light brown in color, and easily identified by two dark, parallel stripes running from its head to the base of its wings.
Habitat & Behaviour
They thrive in warm, humid environments close to food and water sources. Kitchens, bathrooms, and food preparation areas are primary hotspots. They are notorious for infesting appliances, hiding in wall voids, and spreading rapidly through apartment blocks and commercial kitchens. In Cape Town, they are a year-round problem in restaurants, hotels, and residential homes across all suburbs.
Health Risks
German cockroaches are prolific breeders and can cause massive infestations quickly. They are known to carry pathogens like Salmonella and E. coli, contaminate food, and their shed skins and droppings can trigger allergies and asthma attacks, making them a significant public health risk.
American Cockroach (Periplaneta americana)

Description
The largest of the common house-infesting cockroaches, the American Cockroach can grow up to 5 cm long. It is reddish-brown with a yellowish figure-8 pattern on the back of its head. They are strong fliers and are often found in dark, damp, and warm areas.
Habitat & Behaviour
These roaches prefer sewers, drains, basements, boiler rooms, and steam tunnels. In Cape Town, they frequently enter buildings through the drainage systems, especially during warmer months or after heavy rains. They are common in commercial buildings, hospitals, and older homes with accessible crawl spaces and basements across the city.
Health Risks
American cockroaches feed on decaying organic matter and can transfer bacteria from sewers to food preparation surfaces. Their large size makes their presence particularly distressing. Like other species, they can trigger allergies and contaminate food supplies.
Brown-banded Cockroach (Supella longipalpa)

Description
Often confused with the German cockroach due to its similar size (about 1.4 cm), the Brown-banded Cockroach is light brown and has two distinctive light-colored bands across its wings and abdomen. Males are capable of flight.
Habitat & Behaviour
Unlike German cockroaches, this species prefers warmer, drier, and higher locations. They are commonly found inside furniture, behind picture frames, in electronics, high up on walls in closets, and in appliance motors. They are less dependent on moisture and can be found in any room of a house, from bedrooms to living rooms.
Health Risks
They spread filth and bacteria as they move around the house, contaminating surfaces. Because they hide in furniture and electronics, they can be unknowingly transported to new locations, making them difficult to control once established.
Oriental Cockroach (Blatta orientalis)

Description
Known as "water bugs," Oriental cockroaches are large (about 2.5 cm) and have a shiny, dark brown to black body. Females have small, non-functional wing pads, while males have wings that cover most of their abdomen, but neither can fly.
Habitat & Behaviour
This species thrives in cool, damp, dark places. They are frequently found in basements, cellars, drains, sewers, and under porches and leaf litter outdoors. In Cape Town's wet winter months, they are more likely to move indoors in search of shelter. They have a distinct, unpleasant "roachy" odor.
Health Risks
Oriental cockroaches feed on filth and garbage, picking up germs on their legs which they can then spread to food, dishes, and surfaces, posing a serious health risk. Their strong, musty odor can also permeate infested areas.
