Ant Safety Guidelines

At Verminator, your safety, and that of your family and pets, is our top priority. Effective ant control doesn't mean compromising on safety. This guide outlines our approach to safe ant treatments and provides helpful tips.

Our Commitment to Safe Ant Control

We believe in Integrated Pest Management (IPM), which emphasizes using the least hazardous methods first. When pesticides are necessary, we choose:

  • Eco-Friendly Products: We often utilize pyrethroids (derived from chrysanthemum extracts) and microencapsulated formulations. These are effective against ants while having lower toxicity to humans and pets when applied correctly by our trained professionals.
  • Targeted Application: We avoid indiscriminate spraying. Treatments like bait gels, crack and crevice applications, and perimeter barriers are precisely applied where ants live and travel, minimizing exposure.
  • Certified Technicians: Our technicians are SAPCA (South African Pest Control Association) certified and rigorously trained in safe handling and application of all products.
  • Low Odor & Non-Staining: Most products we use are low-odor or odorless and non-staining, ensuring minimal disruption to your home or business.
  • Sensitive Environments: Many of our chosen products are suitable for sensitive areas, including homes with children and pets, kitchens, and even food processing facilities.

Before Your Verminator Ant Treatment

  • Clear Food Areas: While we aim for minimal disruption, it's good practice to clear food preparation surfaces and cover any open food items, especially in kitchens.
  • Pet Safety: Cover pet food and water bowls. If possible, keep pets in a separate, untreated area during the service, or as advised by your technician.
  • Inform Us: Please let your technician know if anyone in the household has specific allergies, chemical sensitivities, or respiratory conditions.
  • Access: Ensure our technician can access areas where ants are seen, such as under sinks or behind appliances, if safe to do so.

During & After Your Ant Treatment

During Treatment:

  • Generally, it's safe to remain in your home or business during our treatments, as we use targeted methods and low-risk products. However, it's advisable to keep a slight distance from areas actively being treated.
  • Your technician will inform you of any specific precautions related to the products being used.

After Treatment:

  • Avoid Cleaning Treated Surfaces: Do not wipe down or clean surfaces where targeted treatments (like bait gels or residual sprays along skirtings) have been applied for at least a week or as advised. This allows the products to remain effective.
  • Ventilation: While our products are low-odor, some light ventilation (opening windows for a short period) might be preferred by some individuals, but is not typically required.
  • Re-entry for Pets/Children: Treated surfaces usually dry quickly. Your technician will advise on specific re-entry times for sensitive individuals, children, or pets to treated areas, which is generally very short. For bait stations, ensure they remain undisturbed.
  • Observe Ant Activity: You might see increased ant activity initially as baits start working. This is normal. Activity should significantly decrease within a few days to two weeks, depending on the species and infestation level.

Our ant control services are backed by a 6-month guarantee. If ants return, so do we!

General Ant Safety & Prevention at Home

  • Store Food Properly: Keep food in airtight containers. Clean up spills and crumbs promptly, especially sugary substances.
  • Manage Waste: Use bins with tight-fitting lids and empty them regularly. Clean bins to remove food residue.
  • Pet Food: Avoid leaving pet food out for extended periods. Clean pet bowls regularly.
  • Seal Entry Points: Inspect your home for cracks and crevices in walls, foundations, around pipes, and window/door frames. Seal these with caulk or appropriate fillers.
  • Manage Moisture: Fix leaky taps and pipes. Ensure good drainage around your home's foundation. Ants are attracted to moisture.
  • Garden Maintenance: Trim vegetation away from the house. Keep firewood and debris piles away from the foundation.
  • Caution with DIY Products: Over-the-counter ant sprays can sometimes be ineffective against the colony, scatter ants, or pose risks if misused. Always follow label instructions carefully. Professional treatment often provides a safer and more comprehensive solution.
